Toby Rzepka

return to award winners

Toby was awarded grants in 2007 and 2008 towards the purchase of tools.  He writes:

"The Trust's generous contribution allowed me to purchase more specialized and higher-quality planes, gouges and chisels to increase the quality and efficiency of my work. Aside from the tenor viol in the style of Henry Smith that I completed last year, I have completed a seven-string bass viol after the Romaine Cheron (ca. 1700) in the Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels (shown here with ground but no varnish), and I am mid-way through a small six-string lyra viol after a Henry Jaye instrument in Paris (1624)."

On completing the course at West Dean, Toby set up his own workshop in Portland, Maine, USA.  There's more about his current work on his website at www.rzepkastrings.com
