Richard Robertson was awarded a grant to buy tools.  The photographs show two instruments made during his second year of study: a bass viol copied from an instrument made by Colichon in 1691, with a walnut back and plum-wood ribs as the original.

The violin is based on a Stainer of 1679 and is set up in baroque style.
