bridge fitted during placement with Colin Cross

A week's work-experience placement was arranged in September 2009 for Florence in the workshop of Colin Cross.  During that time she worked on a double-bass, re-shaping the fingerboard, making a new soundpost and retouching the varnish. She also worked on a cello, making a new soundpost and bridge. There was also time to work on on the viola she started in her second year at Newark: Colin showed her how to shape the neck.

Florence said of this week: "It's been quite busy this week between work and with customers of course, but very useful to see how a workshop works and realise that a big part of the job is dealing with people.  I really enjoyed being plugged in the real world of violin making as I know the course does not cover all the parts of the job... "

The photos show the bridge she fitted at Colin Cross' workshop and also the cello she is working on during her third year of studies.  The award from the RAB Trust also contributed towards the purchase of the book, "The British Violin".
