Antoine was awarded a
grant towards the fittings for his cello, show below. We also arranged for him to have a work experience
placement with Ralph Plumb in Hexham, Northumberland.
Antoine writes of this
experience:
"Thank
you very much for the quality of your placement. I met a passionate,
excellent violin maker and very generous. I am happy!
I am really into varnish, how colours, shadows, light, texture, can
interact with and on people. I had Ralph a few times at the phone before
going to visit him, so I knew he was really interested in the old Italian
varnish process.
I had finished one violin when I went to visit him and I have started the
varnish process with a cello. I wanted then to explain him my
conception of my work, and get some feedback to progress! He
introduced me to some of the varnish methods he uses. We did a few trials,
I discovered a few new products, we spent hours talking about technical
aspects and feelings... In fact I had the sensation of penetrating a new
universe.
Ralph gave me some keys to progress, some directions. But he did not serve
me his knowledge on a plate. And I really appreciated that (we all work
differently anyway.)
Then, since the I am back and after the intensity of the meeting, I work
even more full of passion to progress into my ability to give my
instrument the character I want... "
