During his third year at Newark, Scottish-born William was awarded two BVMA publications: a book on Scottish Violin Makers, and the study of the work of the Voller Brothers.  In addition he was offered a workshop placement with a maker of cellos and basses and a substantial contribution towards his expenses.

William started work on two double basses during his final year of studies, both based on an original bass by William Tarr of 1834.  He is now based back in Caithness and specialising in double bass work.
